New Zealand study eligibility
Can students from Sri Lanka study in New Zealand?
Yes. Sri Lankan students may be considered for New Zealand certificates, diplomas, Bachelor’s degrees, graduate qualifications, postgraduate programmes, Master’s degrees and research pathways. Admission depends on the qualification already completed, subjects, grades, English-language evidence, relevant experience, the selected programme and the education provider’s requirements. A student normally needs an acceptable offer of place before the relevant Student Visa can be granted.
Find your route
New Zealand study pathways based on your current qualification
The right programme should connect your existing education to a realistic academic and career plan. We review Sri Lankan G.C.E. qualifications, international-school qualifications, diplomas, HNDs, degrees and relevant work experience before shortlisting options.
Foundation and certificate pathways
Selected foundation, English-language or certificate routes may help students build academic and language readiness before progressing to a higher-level qualification. Age, grades, English ability and progression conditions vary.
Check foundation optionsDiploma or Bachelor’s degree
Students with suitable G.C.E. A/L, Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or IB results may explore direct undergraduate entry or a diploma-to-degree route. Required subjects and grades differ by course and provider.
Check undergraduate optionsCredit assessment or advanced study
A recognised diploma or HND may support entry to a related Bachelor’s programme, graduate qualification or another suitable level. Any credit transfer or advanced standing is decided by the education provider.
Assess my diploma or HNDGraduate diploma or postgraduate study
Degree holders may explore graduate diplomas, postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas or Master’s programmes. Academic relevance, grades and professional experience can affect the suitable level.
Check postgraduate optionsCareer-focused qualifications
Selected programmes may consider relevant professional experience alongside prior qualifications. The study choice should show a credible academic progression and a clear connection to the applicant’s goals.
Review my work experienceMaster’s by coursework or research
Applicants with suitable prior study may explore taught or research-led Master’s routes. Research programmes can require a proposal, supervisor alignment and evidence of previous research capability.
Check Master’s optionsWhy New Zealand
Why students include New Zealand in their study shortlist
The value of a New Zealand qualification depends on the institution, programme, total budget and your long-term plan. These are practical factors students commonly consider.
Recognised qualification framework
The New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework organises qualifications across ten levels, helping students understand progression from certificates to doctoral study.
University and career-focused study
Students can explore universities as well as vocational, applied, private training and English-language providers, depending on their academic and career goals.
Student wellbeing standards
Education providers enrolling international students must meet relevant pastoral-care responsibilities designed to support learner wellbeing and safety.
Practical learning environment
Many programmes combine academic study with projects, industry engagement, laboratories, placements or applied learning, although the format varies by course.
Study areas
Popular New Zealand study programme areas
Your programme should suit your previous education, interests, budget and intended career direction. Professional accreditation, placements and entry requirements should be checked individually.
Choose the right provider
New Zealand offers more than one type of education pathway
A suitable provider is not selected by ranking alone. Course relevance, qualification level, location, tuition, progression, student support and immigration implications should all be assessed.
- Universities: undergraduate, postgraduate and research-led qualifications across broad subject areas.
- Vocational and applied providers: practical certificates, diplomas, degrees and industry-focused study.
- Private training establishments: specialised programmes offered by approved providers.
- English-language providers: language development or preparation linked to further study.
- Schools: secondary-level study with age, guardian, accommodation and welfare requirements.

Plan early
Common New Zealand study intake periods
Intake dates vary by university, provider and programme. Some courses admit students only once a year, while others have more than one start date.
Often the main academic-year intake, with a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate options. Applications should begin well in advance.
A common mid-year intake for selected programmes. Course choice may be narrower than the main intake, so availability must be checked early.
Selected certificates, diplomas, research programmes and English-language courses may offer additional or rolling starts, subject to provider policy.
Application preparation
Typical admission and Student Visa preparation areas
The exact evidence depends on the applicant, programme and visa type. Documents should be consistent, verifiable and clearly connected to the proposed study plan.
Academic records
Certificates, transcripts, subject results and translations where required. Some programmes may request portfolios, research material or detailed syllabi.
Offer of place
An acceptable offer from the selected New Zealand education provider is a core part of Student Visa preparation. Final conditions must be satisfied before enrolment.
English-language evidence
The provider may require IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL or other accepted evidence. Accepted tests and scores differ by qualification and institution.
Identity, health and character
A valid passport is required. Medical information, chest X-ray evidence or police certificates may be requested depending on the applicant and intended stay.
Tuition and living funds
Applicants must show how tuition, living costs and outward travel will be funded. The source, availability and credibility of funds are important.
Insurance and genuine study plan
Fee-paying students must meet applicable insurance requirements. The overall application should explain a credible reason for the chosen course and provider.
Financial preparation
Living-fund evidence for tertiary and other non-compulsory study
The figures below are Immigration New Zealand’s stated living-cost evidence amounts for tertiary, English-language and other non-compulsory study. Tuition and outward travel must be planned separately.
Study lasting one year or more
NZD 20,000Living-cost evidence required for each year of study, unless an acceptable alternative funding arrangement applies.
Study shorter than one year
NZD 1,667Living-cost evidence required for each month of study, calculated according to the programme duration.
New Zealand Student Visa
Common Student Visa routes for international students
The appropriate visa depends on the study plan, education provider, funding and personal circumstances. Visa conditions should always be checked on the issued eVisa or visa letter.
Fee Paying Student Visa
This route is commonly used by international students paying tuition themselves, through family support, education finance or partial funding. It can permit full-time study with an approved provider for up to four years, subject to the approved course and visa decision.
Pathway Student Visa
This route can support a planned sequence of programmes on one visa, such as English or foundation study followed by a higher qualification. It can allow study for up to five years when the pathway and participating providers meet the applicable requirements.
A complete application is more than an offer letter
Immigration New Zealand may assess the offer of place, tuition arrangements, living and travel funds, source of funds, health, character, insurance, previous education, intended study and whether the applicant genuinely plans to study and follow visa conditions.
During and after study
Student work rights and post-study planning
Work permission is controlled by the conditions of the individual visa. Post-study eligibility depends on the qualification completed and the immigration rules in force when the graduate applies.
Working while studying
Up to 25 hoursEligible students may be permitted to work part-time for up to 25 hours a week and, in some cases, full-time during specified study breaks. This is not automatic for every student—always check the exact visa conditions before working.
Post Study Work Visa
Up to 3 yearsEligible graduates may be able to stay and work in New Zealand for up to three years, depending on the qualification and study completed. Degree-level and non-degree qualifications can have different eligibility and employment conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Study in New Zealand FAQs for Sri Lankan students
These general answers support early planning. A final recommendation requires a review of the student’s profile and the current provider and immigration requirements.
Can I study in New Zealand after Sri Lankan O/Ls?
Potentially. Depending on age, results, English ability and provider policy, students may explore foundation, English-language or certificate pathways. The progression route and welfare arrangements should be checked carefully, especially for younger students.
Can I apply for a New Zealand Bachelor’s degree after A/Ls?
Yes, where the completed subjects and grades meet the selected provider’s entry requirements. Some students may qualify for direct Bachelor’s entry, while others may need a foundation or diploma pathway first.
Do Sri Lankan students need IELTS to study in New Zealand?
Not every provider uses the same evidence. IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL or other approved evidence may be accepted. The required test and score depend on the programme, qualification level and institution.
How much living-fund evidence is required for a New Zealand Student Visa?
For tertiary, English-language and other non-compulsory study, Immigration New Zealand currently states NZD 20,000 for each year when study lasts one year or more, or NZD 1,667 for each month when study is shorter than one year. Tuition and outward travel are additional.
Can international students work while studying in New Zealand?
Some students can. Eligible visa holders may have permission to work for up to 25 hours a week and full-time during specified breaks. The actual permission is recorded in the student’s visa conditions and must be checked before starting work.
What is the main New Zealand university intake?
February or March is commonly the main intake, while many providers also offer selected programmes around July. Some qualifications have additional start dates. Availability and application deadlines differ by programme.
How early should I apply for my New Zealand Student Visa?
Immigration New Zealand recommends applying at least three months before intended travel wherever possible. Students should begin the university or provider application earlier so they have time to satisfy offer conditions and prepare complete financial and visa documents.
Can I remain in New Zealand after graduation?
Eligible graduates may apply separately for a Post Study Work Visa, which can allow work for up to three years depending on the qualification and study completed. Eligibility is not automatic and should be checked against the rules in force when applying.
Does studying in New Zealand guarantee permanent residence?
No. Admission, a Student Visa, post-study work permission, employment and residence are separate matters with different requirements. A study programme should not be presented as a guaranteed residence pathway.
Does Visa Concierge guarantee admission, a scholarship or a visa?
No. Education providers, scholarship bodies and Immigration New Zealand make their own decisions. Visa Concierge provides profile-based guidance, application assistance and document preparation support but cannot guarantee an outcome.
