Flexible lifestyle choices
Foreign residents can choose between Colombo’s commercial centre, coastal communities, hill-country locations and other regional bases.

Colombo and other urban areas offer international schools and higher-education institutions that may support relocating families and foreign students.
Private healthcare access
Established private hospital groups and English-speaking specialists support medical travellers, expatriates and families, subject to individual insurance planning.

Frequently asked questions
Sri Lanka Visa, Immigration and Business Setup FAQs
These direct answers provide a starting point. Individual advice depends on nationality, purpose, sponsor, documents and the rules in force when the application is made.
What is the difference between an ETA, a short-stay visa and a residence visa?
An ETA is an electronic travel approval for eligible short visits to Sri Lanka. A short-stay visa allows temporary entry for tourism, family visits, business meetings, medical visits or transit. A residence visa is for approved longer-term purposes such as employment, study, investment or family residence.
Can a foreign national work in Sri Lanka on a tourist or visit visa?
A tourist or short-visit status does not normally authorise local employment. Foreign nationals who will work in Sri Lanka should confirm the correct employment and residence pathway before starting the role or project.
Can a foreigner register a company in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Foreign investors may establish a Sri Lankan company with foreign shareholding, subject to the Companies Act, sector-specific restrictions, investment rules and any regulatory, BOI or Port City approvals relevant to the activity. Registration is handled through the Registrar of Companies’ eROC system and commonly involves company-name reservation, Articles of Association, an incorporation application, director consents and company-secretary consent. Incorporation does not by itself grant residence or permission to work, so immigration planning should be handled separately.
Which Sri Lanka residence visa category should I apply under?
Your category depends on your purpose of stay and the supporting person or organisation. Common routes include employment, investment, education, family, digital nomad, medical and other approved residence categories.
Is a Sri Lanka Digital Nomad Visa available?
Yes. Sri Lanka offers a Digital Nomad Visa for qualifying remote employees, freelancers and owners of overseas businesses serving clients outside Sri Lanka. Applicants must meet the official income, documentation and eligibility requirements.
Can my spouse and children join me in Sri Lanka?
In many residence visa categories, an eligible spouse and dependent children may apply to join the principal visa holder. Eligibility, documents and visa validity depend on the principal applicant’s visa category and approval by the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Can a Sri Lanka visit visa be extended?
Yes. Eligible tourist visas may be extended, subject to the visa category, current validity and approval by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Apply before the existing visa expires.
How long does a Sri Lanka visa application take?
Processing times vary by visa category, documentation and required authority approvals. Applications needing additional documents, recommendations or checks may take longer, so applicants should apply early and avoid relying on a guaranteed timeframe.
Does Visa Concierge guarantee visa approval?
No. Decisions are made independently by the relevant Sri Lankan authorities. Visa Concierge provides profile-based guidance, document preparation and process coordination but cannot guarantee an outcome.
