Do all patients need a Medical Residence Visa?

No. Sri Lanka’s Tourist Visa category also permits foreign nationals to enter the country for medical treatment, including Ayurvedic and yoga treatments. A Medical Residence Visa may be considered for individuals who require residence facilities for medical treatment, subject to the applicable requirements and approval by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. The appropriate visa route depends on the purpose and circumstances of the stay.

Can a family member accompany the patient?

Yes. The Medical Visa category includes a medical assistant and dependants of the medical visa holder. Therefore, eligible accompanying family members may be covered under the applicable Medical Visa arrangements, subject to the required documents and approval by the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

How long can a Medical Residence Visa be valid?

A Medical Residence Visa may be issued for one year or for the period recommended by the doctor or medical officer, subject to the approval of the Department of Immigration and Emigration and the applicable visa requirements. The visa validity is also subject to the validity of the applicant’s passport and the supporting medical documents.

Can the Medical Residence Visa be renewed?

Yes. A Medical Residence Visa may be renewed annually, subject to the applicant continuing to require medical treatment and meeting the applicable requirements. The renewal is subject to the approval of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and updated medical documents and other supporting documents may be required.

Are Ayurvedic and homeopathic treatments recognised?

Yes. Sri Lanka’s Medical Residence Visa guidelines recognise medical treatment recommended by a doctor or medical officer, including Ayurvedic and homeopathic practitioners. Applicants must provide the relevant medical recommendation and supporting documents, and the application remains subject to the requirements and approval of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Can I work while holding a medical visa?

No. A Medical Residence Visa is issued for the purpose of receiving medical treatment and does not provide permission to work in Sri Lanka. Any employment or work activity would require the appropriate visa or approval under Sri Lankan immigration regulations.
