How Express Entry works

Candidates create an online profile and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranked candidates receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency during regular draws. A complete application is typically processed in approximately 6 months.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is designed for skilled professionals outside Canada who have strong education, work experience, and language ability. Applicants are assessed using a points-based system evaluating education, work history, language proficiency, age, and adaptability.

Work Experience

  • At least 1 year of continuous skilled work experience within the last 10 years
  • Experience must fall under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations

Language

  • Minimum CLB 7 or higher in English or French

Education

  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) verifying foreign education equivalency

Finances

  • Proof of sufficient settlement funds (unless exempt)

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class is designed for individuals who have already gained skilled work experience in Canada. It is one of the fastest routes to permanent residency for temporary foreign workers and international graduates already familiar with the Canadian job market and lifestyle.

Experience

  • At least 12 months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) skilled work experience in Canada
  • Experience must be gained within the last 3 years
  • Work must fall under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations

Additional Conditions

  • Must have had valid authorization during the work experience period
  • Must plan to live outside Quebec (Quebec has its own separate immigration system)

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is created for experienced tradespeople who want to become permanent residents of Canada. It focuses on occupations in high demand across construction, industrial, electrical, and technical trades.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of full-time skilled trade experience within the last 5 years
  • Part-time experience can be combined to meet the requirement
  • Work must align with eligible trade occupations under the official classification system

Other Requirements

  • Must meet medical and security admissibility checks
  • Sufficient settlement funds to support life in Canada (if applicable)
