Study in Canada

Explore leading Canadian universities
University suitability depends on your academic profile, programme, intake, budget and admission requirements. Listing an institution does not imply guaranteed admission or formal representation.
Can Sri Lankan students study in Canada?
Yes. A Sri Lankan student may apply to an eligible Canadian institution and, after receiving a letter of acceptance, apply for a study permit. The right route depends on the programme, institution, finances, academic history, language results and the credibility of the overall study plan.

The main intake with the broadest programme availability. Early preparation is strongly recommended.
A common secondary intake, with availability depending on the institution and programme.
A smaller intake offered for selected programmes and institutions.
Typical admission and study permit requirements
Requirements depend on your institution, programme, province and personal circumstances. A university admission and a study permit are separate decisions.
University application documents
- Passport copy and personal details
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- English or French language evidence where required
- Statement of intent, personal statement or study objectives
- CV, references, portfolio or research proposal where applicable
- Evidence addressing study gaps or relevant work experience
Study permit preparation
A study permit application normally requires a valid letter of acceptance from a DLI, proof of identity, sufficient financial support and other evidence requested for the applicant’s circumstances.
- Letter of acceptance from a DLI
- PAL/TAL or Quebec documentation where required
- Tuition and living-cost financial evidence
- Clear explanation of study purpose and progression
- Biometrics, medical examination or police documents if required
Plan for the full cost of studying in Canada
Do not assess affordability using tuition alone. Your plan should account for institution fees, living costs, travel, insurance, immigration charges and currency movement.
Varies significantly by institution, level, discipline and province.
Housing and daily expenses can differ substantially between cities and provinces.
IRCC lists the study permit fee separately from biometrics and other possible costs.
Understand the work conditions on your study permit
Eligible students may work off campus without a separate work permit only when they meet IRCC conditions. Work should be treated as experience and supplementary income—not as the main funding plan.
Up to 24 hours per week
Eligible students may work off campus up to the permitted weekly limit during regular academic sessions.
Scheduled academic breaks
Eligible students may work full time during scheduled breaks when all applicable conditions are met.
Co-op work permits
A separate co-op work permit may be required when a mandatory work placement forms part of the programme.
Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility is not automatic
A PGWP may allow eligible graduates to gain Canadian work experience after completing an eligible programme. Eligibility depends on the DLI, programme, study level, programme length, mode of study and the immigration rules applying to the graduate.

Study in Canada FAQs for Sri Lankan students
What is the difference between admission and a study permit?
Admission is granted by the institution. A study permit is decided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Receiving an offer does not guarantee permit approval.
Do I need a PAL or TAL for Canada?
Many post-secondary study permit applicants require a provincial or territorial attestation letter. Exemptions apply, including eligible master’s and doctoral students at public DLIs from 1 January 2026. Quebec uses its own CAQ-related process.
Can I work while studying in Canada?
Eligible students may work off campus within the current weekly limit during academic sessions and may work full time during scheduled breaks, subject to all IRCC conditions and the wording on the study permit.
Does every Canadian programme qualify for a PGWP?
No. DLI status alone is not enough. You must check the institution and the specific programme against current PGWP rules before enrolling.
Can studying in Canada guarantee permanent residence?
No. Study, work permits and permanent residence are separate processes. A Canadian qualification or work experience may support future eligibility, but no immigration result is guaranteed.
How early should I apply?
Begin as early as possible because admission deadlines, deposits, PAL/TAL processing, document preparation and study permit processing all take time. Competitive programmes may close early.
How much money must I show?
You must demonstrate sufficient funds for tuition, living expenses and transportation, with additional amounts for accompanying family members. Use the current IRCC figures at the time of application.
